Couples Therapy
Who said relationships are easy?
- Are you struggling to be heard and often feel misunderstood?
- Do the same issues lead to repeated arguments?
- Are you bored or less interested in spending quality time together?
- Do the problems in your relationship impact your physical and emotional intimacy?
Even at their best, relationships take hard work.
Relationship patterns develop over time. Communication problems and unfair fighting often create tension, anger, sadness and resentment in the relationship. If nothing changes, one or both of you can feel a disconnect – and eventually you may stop trying.
In couples therapy, we focus on tearing down unhealthy patterns and creating higher levels of intimacy and understanding. Together we pinpoint the patterns that create stress, conflict or roadblocks in the relationship. Explore how your own “stuff” gets in the way of who you want to be in the relationship. And work towards learning healthier ways of addressing and resolving issues through better communication and fair fighting.
There is no one-size-fits-all process for helping couples create positive change.
Because the way each person learns is unique, therapy is unique to every client. I focus on getting to know you and understanding your issues and goals. My objective is to help you become consistent with the work we do together, and I hold each person accountable for working on improving their relationship with themselves as well as with their partner.
I combine cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with aspects of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to help clients create real change. These treatments focus on helping you identify your negative thoughts and understand how they impact your feelings and behavior. You will learn how to interrupt and change these negative thoughts to help you feel better and act in healthier ways. I also rely heavily on solution-focused and family systems therapy.
