Family Therapy

Does this sound like your family?

  • The constant tension in the house makes it difficult for us to talk to each other.
  • It seems like no one wants to really hear or understand each other.
  • Our teenager refuses to listen to us.
  • We can’t work together to resolve our problems.

Counseling can help your family get back on track.

Families often stop communicating because nothing ever changes. When family members interact the same way over and over, their behaviors turn into patterns – usually without anyone realizing it. As these patterns repeat themselves, it gets harder for individuals to feel heard, included and respected. Over time they give up, believing that things are never going to be any different.

Family counseling helps parents and family members understand each other’s needs and fosters a healthy commitment to change. We explore the roles being played in the family and identify the underlying patterns that have developed as a result. We discuss the positive changes each person needs to make to shift the family dynamic. And together we find ways to improve communications and develop tools for coping with or resolving difficult situations.

Therapy is unique to each client.

Because the way each person learns is unique, therapy is unique to every client. I focus on getting to know you and understanding your family’s issues and objectives. My goal is to help you become consistent with the work we do together, and I hold each family member accountable for working on their personal wellbeing as well as improving the family dynamic.

I combine cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with aspects of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to help clients create real change. These treatments focus on helping you identify your negative thoughts and understand how they impact your feelings and behavior. You will learn how to interrupt and change these negative thoughts to help you feel better and act in healthier ways. I also rely heavily on solution-focused and family systems therapy.
